If you’re interested in cannabis but not really the smoker type, there are other ways you can enjoy some bud. Many people enjoy edibles. Edibles infuse food and drinks with cannabis, allowing for a flavorful and convenient method of enjoying marijuana. Cannabis edibles come in the classic form of a pot brownie but you can also find them in gummies, chocolate, tea, coffee, soda, and even cooking oils. You can enjoy edibles anywhere and because you’re not smoking it, nobody will know.
But if you’ve never tried edibles before, you may be a little anxious. What is the experience like? How long do the effects last? Here’s what to expect when ingesting cannabis for the first time.
When Do the Effects Kick In?
How long can you expect to wait in order to experience a marijuana high? Most people experience the psychoactive effect of cannabis edibles between 30 minutes and two hours after consumption.
However, this depends on several factors, such as:
- Your individual metabolic rate.
- Your body mass index.
- How much tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) you have consumed.
Just keep in mind that everyone reacts differently to cannabis, so your friend may get high at a quicker or slower pace than you. It just all depends on how quickly it is metabolized. Edibles do not reach the bloodstream before passing through the digestive system. However, the THC is transformed into a stronger form by the liver.
How Long Do the Effects Last?
Again, everybody responds to edibles differently, so there is no clear-cut answer as to how long a marijuana high will last. Generally, the higher the dose, the longer the effects will last. Your edible high could last anywhere from a few hours to most of the day. THC levels tend to peak in the bloodstream several hours after ingestion.
Some people feel the effects of edibles to wane after four hours, while others feel high for as long as 12 to 24 hours after ingestion. On average, the effects of edibles last anywhere from 4 to 8 hours.
The length of the effects are primarily based on the dosage, so you want to be sure not to overconsume. If you are a beginner or have a low tolerance for cannabis, you will want to start with a smaller dose, such as 2.5 mg. At the very most, start at 5 mg. If you have tried edibles before and understand how they affect you, you can go for a larger dose of 10 or 15 mg. Try not to go too much above that, though, as doses above 25 mg are associated with nausea and vomiting.
