CBD vs. THC: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to the cannabis industry, there are so many terms. For example, CBD and THC. What do these acronyms mean and how are they different from each other?

Beginners Guide For THC Gummies

The cannabis plant makes a thick substance that is full of compounds called cannabinoids. There are more than 100 cannabinoids, but the two main ones are CBD and THC. CBD is short for cannabidiol and THC is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. Both cause drug-like reactions in your body.

However, the main difference between the two is that THC produces a high, while CBD does not. Here are some other differences you should know about.

Chemical Structure

CBD is non-psychoactive, so it does not produce a high. However, it may increase levels of anandamide, which is a mood-regulating molecule.

THC is psychoactive, so it does produce a high. It binds to receptors in the brain, leading to altered perception, euphoria, and sometimes anxiety.

Effects on the Body

CBD promotes relaxation without impairing cognitive function. It is often used to reduce:

  • Inflammation
  • Anxiety
  • Pain
  • Seizures

THC is often used for pain relief, nausea reduction, and improving appetite, especially for cancer and HIV patients. It produces euphoria, altered perception, and appetite stimulation. However, in high doses, it can cause anxiety, paranoia, or even sedation.

Medical Uses

CBD is commonly used for chronic pain, anxiety, epilepsy, and insomnia. It is found in products like oils, capsules, and topical creams.

THC is used to treat pain, muscle spasticity, glaucoma, insomnia, nausea, and low appetite. It is available in various forms like edibles, vape pens, tinctures, and smokable flower.

Legality

CBD is legal in many places if derived from hemp with less than 0.3% THC content. It is not regulated as strictly as THC, but some regions still restrict CBD-infused food or beverages. THC is federally illegal in the country, though many states such as New Jersey have legalized it for recreational or medical use.
