He also co-created a political action committee known as the Reefer Raiders, which used some confrontational tactics to get its message across. They would gather outside of federal buildings and smoke weed right in the open, much to the frustration of the lawmakers inside.
In 1985, Herer would truly make a name for himself after self-publishing his book The Emperor Wears No Clothes. The book was a comprehensive examination of the history, uses, and benefits of marijuana. It chronicled the history of cannabis criminalization in the United States and included stories of government cover-ups and hypocrisies through the years.
It also detailed the practical benefits of hemp. While the book remains in print today, many of its themes remain controversial. Over the next several decades, Herer became a prominent figure in the fight for marijuana legalization.
He was instrumental in the passage of Proposition 215. It was the landmark 1996 California ballot initiative that legalized medical marijuana in the state.
His Legacy in a Strain
