Who Was Jack Herer? The Man Behind the Strain and the Movement

Many people have pioneered cannabis into what it is today. These individuals served as activists in the early years and helped spread the word about the drug and its uses and benefits.

One important activist in the cannabis field was Jack Herer. Herer was born in 1939 and died in 2010. He was a well-known cannabis rights activist as well as the founder and director of the organization Help End Marijuana Prohibition (HEMP).

Herer first developed an interest in cannabis in the 1970s and quickly became an early supporter of legalization after being introduced to the plant by a friend. He went on to become a passionate and outspoken advocate, known for his activism and his ability to educate and engage the public about cannabis.

A true pioneer in the push for legalization, Herer played a key role in raising public awareness about the plant. Herer also helped launch several influential organizations, including the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), and was a frequent speaker at cannabis events and conferences throughout his career.

His Activism

Jack Herer: Cannabis Activist

Herer wanted to change public policy. He traveled across the country speaking to the public. He also co-created a political action committee known as the Reefer Raiders, which used some confrontational tactics to get its message across. They would gather outside of federal buildings and smoke weed right in the open, much to the frustration of the lawmakers inside.

In 1985, Herer would truly make a name for himself after self-publishing his book The Emperor Wears No Clothes. The book was a comprehensive examination of the history, uses, and benefits of marijuana. It chronicled the history of cannabis criminalization in the United States and included stories of government cover-ups and hypocrisies through the years.

It also detailed the practical benefits of hemp. While the book remains in print today, many of its themes remain controversial.  Over the next several decades, Herer became a prominent figure in the fight for marijuana legalization.

He was instrumental in the passage of Proposition 215. It was the landmark 1996 California ballot initiative that legalized medical marijuana in the state.

His Legacy in a Strain

The Jack Herer strain is a sativa-dominant hybrid, believed to be a cross of Haze, Northern Lights #5, and Shiva Skunk. It is known for uplifting, creative, and energetic feelings. Its flavor is a mix of citrus, pine, herbs, and flowers. It is known for its high levels of THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana. It can help with stress, depression, and anxiety.
